Work for January 2009

Here finally is the work for this year including work for the Drouin version of Up and................ as well as other work done over the month

seatI  did this bigger seat.It might be a bit better but it is a bit more expensive to do and organise bridge I had a commission to make a bridge and a well.
well This is the well. aim 2 We had just had the Up exhibition at Yarram and we sold quite a bit so I had to do similar pieces for the show when it went to Drouin. This one is called aim 2

I was given a drum full of these pieces. Tail shaft joints or something and I just loved the form of it. I have done lots of cutting up and using them as part of other sculptures but I thought that the form itself suggested so many possibilities. As to if it is a gun, a telescope, a sculpture or theodilite that the man is looking through … I guess it depends how you are feeling but he certainly is aiming "up"!

 dive

This is another piece I have modified from the Yarram exhibition.

I made a man dropping a bouncing ball for Yarram  I love to play with pieces I create and often the combination of bits, suggest new forms.  In the Yarram piece it took up a bit of space in that it had a lot of distance in front of the tower. This time I cut off all that and made a small tank( with mirror) for the guy to dive into.

my space

My friend Grant showed me a book which had a man using steel wool as a medium for part of his sculptures (of trains) and I loved the idea. I love texture and I made a series of sculptures with steel wool as clouds, tree leaves and clouds. I made a sculpture for BSG and Yarram entitled "Rain" using this idea and it sold.

This piece uses the steel wool as foliage and again it was suggested by the" drawn" website where there was a girl in a bare tree. I used to love to climb and sit in trees and it was always a special place that was safe ( unless you fell out!) and very personal. I wanted to have a go at creating this "UP" space for this exhibition and I quite like the serenity of its little character. I think this "My Space" is a bit more private than the web Myspace!

heart kiteI made a kite flyer a while ago but for this exhibition I thought about playing with heart images. This one is about how we fly our hearts to be noticed and find our partner.  rider2

I have played with birds in a number of forms ( whoops don’t misunderstand me Marian!!)

This bird has an added burden but doesn’t seem to mind. I looked at "Drawn" the website earlier in the year and there was an image of a child straddling the neck of a bird as it flew.  Anyway for this exhibition I came back to the original inspiration  although I made her sit a bit side saddle and I quite like the joy of this composition.

confidence

This is another piece I have modified from Yarram.

I made a tight rope walkers previously for other exhibitions. In one, the rope had broken and he was standing in mid air and in the other he was using a big balance bar. This one is another pose and I have tried to express the awkwardness that is part of the act for feats of balance that are now beyond my abilities. ( I am happy to be able to touch my toes… Thank you pilates). It all comes down to confidence in the end and I am finding that out in all sorts of spheres of life so I thought it needed some aspect reproduced for this exhibition.

lift

This is another piece I have modified from the Yarram exhibition.

I love to play with pieces I create and often the combination of bits, suggest new forms. This is the case with this one and I love the fact that the ball is way too big for him. As a tall man I used to lift all sorts of things when I was young and foolish. Now I avoid any such macho show off behavior. This fellow is happy to have achieved this great feat but often such things come back to haunt us as back problems etc. I guess he can enjoy his time of achievement ( because he is metal he is stuck with it for quite a bit!)
