LLANFAIRBRYN Welsh Mountain Pony Stud was founded in 1968 with the purchase of a filly from Fairway followed by four fillies from Nattai and three females from Yoorami which included a View Bank mare. Then followed a filly from Trentlyn and mares from Bolaro, Acheron, Lenson Park and Lykanarrow. By far the most influential female purchased by Llanfairbryn and the founder of our most successful and dominant line was the imported UK filly Crossways Foxy.
The Stud was founded on Coed Coch, Twyford and Revel bloodlines, and we continue to include as much of this blood as possible and to keep imported blood up as close as we can, to ensure superiority and trueness to type.

The mares whose blood remains in the stud are -

Crossways Foxy (Imp) (Coed Coch Shon x Foxhunter Titlark by Clan Pip)
Trentlyn Tarina (Bolaro Bumblebee x View Bank Typical by Nattai Eclipse 2nd)
Bolaro Oona (Twyford Noddy (Imp) x Owendale Olive by Fairway Justin), View Bank Gossip (Nattai Eclipse 2nd x View Bank Topic by Nattai Flashlight),
Lenson Park Desere (Menai Silver Sand (Imp) x Acheron Delightful by Bowdler Badger Boy (Imp).

Over the years mares have been covered by the Stud's own stallions and some have been sent out, so that we have the female progeny of Coed Coch Bedwyn (Imp), Llanfairbryn Desert Fox, Nattai Bedwyn, Llanfairbryn Cardiff, Twyford Negus (Imp), Bolaro Bumblebee, Glynyarra Kristian, Stanton Park Sideshow and Congarinni King Cyrus.

The Stud's first stallion was the homebred brown/black Llanfairbryn Llewellyn (Fairway Springlight (IIU) x Fairway Kieva by Naroo Nightlight) a multi Champion and Stud Show winner himself and sire of a dual Royal Show Champion. Llewellyn was followed in 1975 by the UK bred grey Twyford Sizzle (Imp) (Twyford Puzzle x Twyford Swallow (Imp) by Twyford Guardsman) who remained at the Stud for some 14 years. Sizzle was a multi Champion and sire of Champions. His decendants through his daughters Llanfairbryn Foxtrot and Llanfairbryn Geraldine remain in the Stud.

Then in 1980 the UK bred grey Coed Coch Bedwyn (Imp) (Coed Coch Pela x Coed Coch Doli (Imp) by Coed Coch Salsbri) joined the Stud where he remained until reaching the great age of 31 in 2002. Coed Coch Bedwyn has 5 daughters remaining in the stud today, the three full sisters Llanfairbryn Miss Daisy, Foxy and Last Waltz, Llanfairbryn Miss Brodrick and the Part Welsh/Riding Pony mare Llanfairbryn Ginger Rogers.

The homebred grey Llanfairbryn Desert Fox (Imperial Cyrus x Llanfairbryn Foxtrot by Twyford Sizzle (Imp)) foaled in 1991 stood at the Stud until 2001. Desert Fox is an Agricultural Show multi Supreme Champion, Royal Show Resv. Champion, Victorian All-Welsh Show, National Welsh Show and Victorian Welsh Feature Show winner, and Victorian Foal Futurity Winner.

Llanfairbryn Desert Fox (Imperial Cyrus x Llanfairbryn Foxtrot by Twyford Sizzle (Imp))

He is the sire of (amongst others) Llanfairbryn Mererid, Grand Champion Welsh Exhibit at the 2000 Queensland APSB Stud Pony Show and Llanfairbryn Ffansi That Supreme Champion Exhibit (Ring 1) at the WP&CSofA G&P Welsh Foal Show 2002 and the exceptional saddle pony Llanfairbryn Cumquat and harness pony Llanfairbryn Dancing Fox. The last Llanfairbryn foals by Desert Fox were dropped in the 2001 season. Desert Fox is represented in the stud today by his daughter Llanfairbryn Ffansi That.

In 2000 Bedwyn and Desert Fox were joined by the Coed Coch bred cream Cardross Llewellyn (Coed Coch Gwyndaf (Imp) x Coed Coch Rhadol (Imp) by Coed Coch Barrog).

Llewellyn stood at Llanfairbryn from 2000 from 2003. Bred by the late Anne Campbell, Llewellyn was an Agricultural Show Supreme Champion and sire of Supreme Champions led, ridden and in harness, including State and National Titles, a Royal Champion and POY class winner.
Llewellyn's sire Coed Coch Gwyndaf (Imp) was Grand Champion In-Hand Exhibit at the Victorian All-Welsh Show and Most Successful Exhibit, twice Champion Melbourne Royal and Supreme Champion WMP Exhibit at the National Stud Pony Show. Gwyndaf topped the WP&CSofA Sire Ratings. Llewellyn's dam Coed Coch Rhadol (Imp) was shown only twice for twice Champion WMP Mare at the Victorian All-Welsh Show.
Llewellyn's first progeny carrying our Llanfairbryn prefix were foaled in 2001, and his last for us were dropped in the 2003. Llewellyn is now deceased. Llewellyn is represented in the stud today by his grand daughter Llanfairbryn Christening Day.

Glynyarra Park Doulton was purchased as a weanling and stood at stud at Llanfairbryn for two seasons, before being sold to Queensland. He left us several foals who have excelled in the showring. We retained Llanfairbryn Corn Doli, Reserve Champion Filly at the 2006 Royal Melbourne Summer Show and Champion Mare at the 2007 Royal Melbourne Summer Show, whose full show record is listed on the Mares page and sold her full brother Llanfairbryn Goldrush to Ashley Porter for whom he won his colt class at the Victorian All-Welsh Show and the Australian Welsh Nationals. Llanfairbryn Eirian, sold to Denise Whiting in WA won her class at the WA All-Welsh.

Nattai Bedwyn, named by his breeder, the late Lady Creswick, after our Coed Coch Bedwyn (Imp), was purchased by Llanfairbryn in partnership with Miss J McDonald and joined the Stud in November 2003. His breeding greatly complements our Coed Coch/Twyford bloodlines. Twyford Maple (Imp) was a Royal Melbourne Show Champion Colt and was sired by Rhyd-y-Felin Swgwr (full brother to the illustrious Coed Coch Siaradus) and out of the beautiful matron Twyford Magpie. Bedwyn's dam Nattai Ragtime (full sister to Melbourne and Sydney Royal Show Supreme Champion Nattai Cream of Eppynt) is sired by world record price holder, the legendary Coed Coch Bari (Imp).
Bedwyn, a multi Champion, was Champion Stallion at the 2001 Victorian All-Welsh Show under Dorthe Bagason of Denmark. At the 2006 Welsh Nationals, under David Puttock and Marie-Claire Nimmo of the UK, Bedwyn was Champion Sec A Stallion, Supreme Champion Sec A Exhibit and Champion Welsh Stallion (All Sections). At the Autumn Welsh Show he was Champion Sec A Stallion, Supreme Champion Sec A Exhibit and Grand Champion In-Hand Exhibit.

Tragically we lost our 2 yo colt Llanfairbryn Jack the Lad to colic in June 2004 only months after he was Junior Champion at Melbourne Royal 2004. We had such high hopes for Jack but they were not to be. In 2004 Llanfairbryn Christine and Llanfairbryn Christabel foaled a colt and a filly respectively. The filly, Llanfairbryn Christening Day, has been retained and the colt Llanfairbryn Harlequin is now in South Australia where he is a multi Supreme Champion. Jack was sired by Cardross Llewellyn and was out of Llanfairbryn Foxy.

In 2005 Llanfairbryn Cadno returned to us as a 17 yo. We were delighted to regain his bloodlines as he is almost completely Coed Coch bred, being by Coed Coch Bedwyn (Imp) and out of Llanfairbryn Foxglove who was by Nattai Shon and out of Crossways Foxy (Imp).

Alongside the Mountain Ponies, Llanfairbryn has also bred Welsh Ponies, Welsh Cobs, Part Welsh, Riding Ponies, Thoroughbreds, Anglo/Arabians and Warmbloods. The Thoroughbred mares Our Piccaninny, My Fair Lady and Swift Ace all have descendants in the Stud today. The Stud currently has Part Welsh/Riding Pony females by Coed Coch Bedwyn (imp) and Congarinni King Cyrus.

Stock owned and shown by Llanfairbryn have excelled in the showring as led and performance animals and also proved their worth as breeding stock. Since the Stud's foundation in 1968 major achievements have been Grand Championships at Royal Melbourne Shows, Supreme Championships at Victorian Stud Pony Show, Senior Welsh Mountain Pony of the Year, National Welsh Titles, Championships in Led, Saddle and Harness at Victorian and New South Wales All-Welsh Shows, Supreme Championships and Grand Championships at WP&CSofA Foal and Youngstock Shows, Championships at WP&CSofA Welsh Feature Shows, plus many Agricultural Show Supreme Championships.

Stock bred by Llanfairbryn or by our stallions have also excelled in all Australian States and New Zealand with Royal Show Supreme Championships, All-Welsh Show Championships, State Stud Show Supreme Welsh Exhibit, State and National Championships in harness, Welsh Foal Show Grand Championships etc.

Llanfairbryn Stud and Anthony are both life members of the WP&CSofA and Suellen is an Honorary Life Member, past COM Chairman, past Chairman of Editing, Journal Editor for 11 years and past President of the Society. Anthony is a past Chairman of the Victorian All Welsh Show Committee.

Anthony, Suellen and Katherine are all judges. Anthony and Suellen are on the WP&CSofA Panel of Judges and Inspectors for all Sections and Saddle and Harness and are EFA Judges, VASA Judges, APSB Judges and on the Panels for several breed Societies. They have judged overseas at several shows in New Zealand and South Africa and at many Royal and other major shows in Australia. In 2006 Anthony and Suellen judged at the Northern Ireland Asscn of the WP&CS National Balmoral Championships in Belfast and Suellen judged the Sec A’s at the National Welsh Championships on Shrewsbury, England.

We have long been captivated by the Mountain Ponies of Wales and the story of their survival and evolution. It is our great pleasure and aim to breed ponies full of Welsh character coupled with quality and elegance, suitable to be ridden or driven by children and adults. They are reared in big hilly paddocks where they can socialise and gallop to develop heart, lungs and limbs. Temperament is of the greatest importance to us. We trust that the ponies we are breeding will bring to their future owners the same pride and joy that they give us.
