A study of the South Gippsland koala population by Dr Bronwyn Houlden, has found Œthat the Strzelecki Ranges has the highest level of genetic variation of any Victorian population she has analyzed.¹ They are genetically distinct from the koalas originating from French Island, and which have been translocated into other parts of Victoria. Dr. Houlden has stated that Œthe conservation of South Gippsland and Strzelecki Ranges population is of local, State and National significance for conservation of biodiversity in koalas¹.
