Community campaigns for Reserves in the Strzelecki Ranges

 

1900s 

Campaign for the reservation of the Bulga and Tarra Valley forests.  These areas eventually become the Tarra  Bulga  National  Park.  In 1982 part of Macks Creek Valley was added to the park.  In 2004, a small addition was made.

 

1950s  Campaign for the area near Yinnar South.  This became  Morwell National  Park.

 

1970s  Campaign for Mt. Worth reserve.  Mt. Worth becomes a State Park in 1984.

 

1980s 

During the  Land Conservation Council investigation, many groups pushed for further reserves in the Strzeleckis.  These included a park in the  Gunyah area of approximately 4,000 hectares, the proposed Mirboo North Regional park, Traralgon South, Gormandale, Hazel park, Toora Tin Mine , Turtons Creek and extensions to Tarra Bulga National park to create a park of 7,000 ha.

After the LCC study finished, a campaign continued  to reserve areas at Gunyah.  In 1987 680 ha. at Gunyah  becomes  the Gunyah Rainforest Reserve.

A campaign to reserve 750 ha. in the Womerra Creek Catchment  was refused.

 

1990s:

 

1996 Ministerial protection called for the College Creek area.

 

1998   A campaign to create a major National Park in the Strzeleckis, of 30,000 ha, including  the current 5,000 ha. of existing reserves.

2002   The Strzelecki Working Group proposes the establishment of high biodiversity ‘Core and Link’ areas (8,500 ha.)  identified in the Strzelecki  Ranges Biodiversity Study be made a permanent reserve in line with Government commitments to ‘full protection of all conservation areas in the Strzelecki Ranges’.

2003   The Strzelecki Working Group proposes the reservation of all non leased State forest in the Strzelecki Ranges. 

2003  The Friends of Tarra Bulga National Park call for an extended Strzelecki national park in accordance with Recommendation 3.4 of the VNPA’s Nature Conservation Review 2001.
