Chooks
It was a project which began about 2 years ago and has finally been completed in January 2008 while Simon has been on holidays. It was a dilapidated shed in the rear corner of our allotment which needed some restoration and conversion into a suitable enclosure for keeping up to 10 hens in accordance with Local Laws.
We now have 3 hens
They have settled in to their new home and seem happy in their enclosure. They have an undercover section for roosting & laying and a seperate section for feeding as well as an outdoor area behind the hen house. They are also free to range around the back yard during the day and always put themselves to bed and night.
We have a first season ISA Brown who has been a regular layer since we got her. Also we have a first season Plymoth Rock and a second season Silver Laced Wyandotte.
We moved into our home on the 24th of June 2005. It is a 3 bedroom timber house with a tile roof. The house is 50+ years old and needs some cosmetic work done to it to freshen it up but apart from that it is in pretty good condition. Last year we had the roof re-bedded and pointed and sprayed with a product from Roof Shield which is supposed to last for 15 years. It has certainly given the roof a lift and the finish appears to be weathering much better than other houses in our street which were done around the same time using different techniques. There is room underneath the back of the house due to the gradient of the block to build a 2 room extension and we plan to do this when we are able. The carport and driveway needs re-concreting and we will hopefully proceed with this sometime after April 2008. A retaining wall is also being planned to give us a level back yard so that our kids have somewhere to play safely. Meet Carlos Eduardo Gradi Bautista. He is a young boy we are now sponsoring through
Compassion. He lives with his mother and a brother in
Honduras where over half the population survive below the poverty line. Sadly his father has passed away. Carlos helps around the home by making beds, doing various domestic chores and cleaning. Carlos' mother is sometimes able to earn a small wage by selling goods at the market place. Though she works hard she constantly struggles to provide for the two children in her family.
Soccer, playing with toy cars and with marbles are Carlos' favourite activities. He is in primary school where he is steadily progressing in his studies. Carlos also attends church programs and goes to Bible class.
